S L asked: I remember hearing once that a debt after a certain amount of years, is moot. Does it depend on the state where the debt occurred or you current state of residence?
I heard that collection agencies that specialize in buying old debts, to try and collect on, **** for people to know about these laws. Where does one look up information about this? And what exactly does one do to bring it to the attention of the collection people, that you are no longer obligated by law to pay on such an old debt?

tim asked: I’ve got some debt that’s currently in collections. And I got to talking to one of the debt collectors and he revealed that the average company is willing to settle for about 75% of the debt owed.
But since they’re basically screwing you with outragous interest that never allows you to really pay off the principal debt, are they willing to settle for even less.
What are some useful tricks when dealing with these parasites?

Wazy asked: If there is a debt on a property owned by a person who is now deceased, how can the debt be collected if the executers do not issue their probate?
The executers have been asked to pay the debt however because they are not issuing their probate I cannot claim the money owed to me from them. It has been quite some time since they were asked to pay the debt. Any advice on how I can get my debt.

Carribian Bound asked: I am planning a move to the Dominican Republic from the US. I have unsecured debt (school loans and credit cards) which I want to repay, but the average income in the Dominican Republic is much lower and I know I would not be able to make minimum payments. Can the debt be converted or possibly bought out by a bank there or something like that?

Thanks.

robertk asked: 18 years (1988) ago my ex partner and I took out a mortage and at the time we need a little extra and took a top up mortage as well. Unfortanatley we did not last the course of time and split up. The mortage company repossed the house and I believe sold it. All my old debts I thought had been cleared and I have manage over the last 15 years to build up a good credit rating and my life has changed now by having a new partner and two children. But now in the last few weeks a company has writtern to me saying that they have purchased an old debt, the top up mortage and are requesting me to pay it off. A couple of things, can they still chase me for a old debt after all this time (18 years) without any contact, do I have to pay them, is my ex partner liable for this debt as it was in joint names and what happens if I cannot afford to pay them off. To me, my children and new partner come first, would I have to declare myself bankruprt and I so what would happen to my debt and credit rating.
