mixed & beautiful asked: I owe about 2 grand of debt to different debt collectors. I work and attend college like most young adults my age, but does not make a lot of money every 2 weeks. I really want to get rid of my debt but does not know the best way how. What should I do?

desta asked: It is the only contact I have received from them. My name is not on the email. The web address included to contact them is not accessible to me. When I tried it, the message read that I needed to try a different domain. I know I have no debts owed. I have not received any mail or telephone calls from debt collectors. Does this sound like a hoax, scam or legitimate email?

Christina asked: I had a rough time a few years ago, and stopped paying my credit cards and cell phone to be able to keep paying the rent and then i lost my job, it was all sent to debt collectors. I’m ready to get this taken care of so I can rebuild my credit somehow, but I don’t know which companies hold the debts. How do I find out? I haven’t heard from any of them in almost a year.

Jeff W asked: What information do debt collectors receive when a company forwards a debt for collection? Do they simply get the information for the debt (name, address, phone, soc. security number, etc.) or do they get the entire account history etc? Also do debt collectors have the ability to file criminal charges for nonpayment or only civil to get the money back?

tim asked: I’ve got some debt that’s currently in collections. And I got to talking to one of the debt collectors and he revealed that the average company is willing to settle for about 75% of the debt owed.
But since they’re basically screwing you with outragous interest that never allows you to really pay off the principal debt, are they willing to settle for even less.
What are some useful tricks when dealing with these parasites?

RE-AGENT asked: A relative who have never lived in my household, not even a day, apparently have outstanding debts. Now the debt collectors have been calling my phone and leaving messages. A couple of times, they were told to stop calling my number as I don’t know the whereabouts of the individual they want to collect from. However, they never stop. I reported them to the FTC but not action taken. Now, I am surely mad that I want to sue them. Any info highly appreciated. I am located in MD.
